How Long Will a Power Station Run a Mini Fridge?
By Hicham M. · Updated October 17, 2026 · How we calculate
A dorm-size fridge is one of the easier things to keep running. The compressor draws about 75 W while it runs, then rests, so over a day it averages about 29 W (0.7 kWh). That gives about 29 hours on a 1,000 Wh power station and about 2.4 days on a 2,000 Wh one.
Starting it is a smaller hurdle than with a full-size fridge, but it’s still there: we plan on about 500 W for a split second, in line with Champion’s chart (400–600 W). Stations that can’t supply that are listed under the main table.

What ENERGY STAR’s data says, by size
ENERGY STAR counts anything under 7.75 cubic feet as compact. We took the 1,766 certified models it lists as compact refrigerators and worked out the middle (median) model in each size range. Bigger uses more, but less than you might think: the middle model from 4 to 5 cu ft uses only about 30% more than the middle one under 2 cu ft.
| Size | Models | Median per year | Average draw | On 1,000 Wh | On 2,000 Wh |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 2 cu ft | 272 | 208 kWh | 24 W | 36 hours | 3 days |
| 2 to 3 cu ft | 177 | 215 kWh | 25 W | 35 hours | 2.9 days |
| 3 to 4 cu ft | 557 | 230 kWh | 26 W | 32 hours | 2.7 days |
| 4 to 5 cu ft | 383 | 269 kWh | 31 W | 28 hours | 2.3 days |
| 5 cu ft and up | 377 | 276 kWh | 32 W | 27 hours | 2.2 days |
Our calculation from ENERGY STAR’s certified-refrigerator dataset, October 2026. Across all 1,766 compact models the median is 246 kWh a year; the lowest 10% use 206 kWh or less and the highest 10% use 332 kWh or more. Your own fridge’s figure is on its yellow EnergyGuide label.
A freezer compartment costs more than extra space
The type of fridge matters more than its size. Models with a small freezer section use about half again as much as manual-defrost fridges with none, going by the medians in each of DOE’s product classes:
| Compact fridge type (median model) | Models | Per year | Average draw | On 1,000 Wh |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No freezer, manual defrost | 637 | 215 kWh | 25 W | 35 hours |
| No freezer, automatic defrost | 635 | 255 kWh | 29 W | 29 hours |
| With freezer compartment (partial automatic defrost) | 418 | 326 kWh | 37 W | 23 hours |
Compact fridge-freezers with fully automatic defrost are rarer (under 50 models in the list) and use more again. If all you need is cold drinks or medicine in an outage, a fridge without a freezer section goes noticeably further.
Don’t size the station from the spec sheet’s amps. Frigidaire’s sheet for its 3.1 cu ft FFPS3133UM says “115V / 60Hz / 15A”, which is the circuit it wants, not what it draws. Grainger lists Danby’s 1.0 cu ft DAR010A1 at 1 A.
Dorm, office or RV: when a 12 V fridge makes more sense
In a van, an RV or on a long camping trip, a mini fridge keeps the station’s inverter on around the clock. A 12 V compressor cooler skips it. Dometic publishes real consumption for its CFX3 coolers on 12 V, measured at a hot 90°F (32°C) with the inside held at 39°F (4°C):
| Cooler | Size | On 12 V | Works out to | On 1,000 Wh (12 V port) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dometic CFX3 35 | 36 L | 0.98 Ah per hour | about 12 W | 3.2 days |
| Dometic CFX3 55 | 55 L | 1.1 Ah per hour | about 13 W | 2.8 days |
“Works out to” is our multiplication of amp-hours by 12 V; runtimes use the 90% we assume for DC ports. Dometic’s test is hotter than most rooms, so indoors they should do at least this well.
Against the 29 W we use for a mini fridge on AC, that’s more than twice the runtime from the same battery. The trade-off is price and size: a 36 L cooler holds far less than a 3 cu ft (85 L) fridge.
Keeping it cold longer
- Set the station’s AC outlet timeout to “never”. A mini fridge draws very little while the compressor rests, and some stations switch the outlets off when the load drops.
- Keep a thermometer inside. The FDA says the fridge should stay at or below 40°F (4°C), and calls an appliance thermometer the best way to know.
- Give it room to breathe. ENERGY STAR suggests keeping a fridge away from heat sources such as an oven or direct sun, with a few inches between it and the wall.
- Divide the kWh per year on its EnergyGuide label by 365 and enter the result in the runtime calculator. Our 0.7 kWh a day is close to the ENERGY STAR median.
- Skip the freezer compartment if you don’t need it, and keep the door shut. Every opening lets warm air in.
