How Many Times Can a Power Station Charge a Laptop?
By Hicham M. · Updated October 17, 2026 · How we calculate
A laptop barely dents a power station. Its battery holds roughly 50–100 Wh, and the charger’s rating (60 W, 70 W, 140 W) is the most it can pull, not what it usually does. We plan on about 50 W for a laptop in use on its AC adapter, which a 1,000 Wh station keeps going for about 17 hours.
Charge it from the station’s USB-C port instead and the energy skips a conversion: no inverter turning battery power into 120 V, no power brick turning it back. For any laptop that charges over USB-C, that’s the better way.

Battery size vs charger rating
The battery size, not the charger, tells you how many refills you get. Here are some current laptops, with what their makers publish:
| Laptop | Battery | Charger in the box | Full charges from 1,000 Wh |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air 13-inch (M5) | 53.8 Wh | 40 W (60 W max) | about 17 |
| Dell XPS 13 (9350) | 55 Wh | 60 W USB-C | about 16 |
| Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 | 57 Wh | 65 W USB-C | about 16 |
| MacBook Air 15-inch (M5) | 66.5 Wh | 40 W (60 W max) | about 14 |
| MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5) | 72.4 Wh | 70 W | about 12 |
| MacBook Pro 16-inch (M5 Pro) | 99.6 Wh | 140 W | about 9 |
| Lenovo Legion Pro 7 (gaming) | 80 or 99.9 Wh | 400 W barrel plug | about 9 (99.9 Wh) |
“Full charges” is our division of 1,000 Wh × 90% (our figure for USB-C ports) by the battery size, from empty to full with the laptop off. It’s an upper bound: the laptop’s own charging losses aren’t published, and using it while it charges takes more.
USB-C or the AC outlet?
USB-C Power Delivery used to top out at 100 W, using 20 V at 5 A. The USB Implementers Forum’s 2021 update added 28 V, 36 V and 48 V levels for 140 W, 180 W and 240 W. Most power stations in our database offer up to 100 W per USB-C port; a smaller group offers 140 W. That covers most laptops:
- Apple says the MacBook Air fast-charges from a 70 W or higher USB PD source, and the 14-inch MacBook Pro from 96 W. A 100 W port clears both.
- Dell says the XPS 13 charges at 27–60 W, so even a modest port works, just more slowly at the low end.
- The 16-inch MacBook Pro ships with a 140 W adapter and needs 140 W or more to fast-charge, so only a 140 W port matches it.
- Gaming laptops are different. Lenovo’s Legion Pro 7 ships with a 400 W adapter; its USB-C port supports 95–100 W of USB PD. Run it from the AC outlet with its own brick.
Our calculators assume 90% of the battery reaches USB and 12 V ports and 85% reaches the AC outlets. Going through the AC outlet also adds the losses of the laptop’s own power brick, which we don’t count, so the real gap is a bit wider than that.
What a laptop really draws
Charger ratings are maximums. ENERGY STAR tests every certified laptop sitting idle, and the numbers are small. We took the 1,157 notebooks in its current list: the median uses 4.9 W at short idle and 0.6 W asleep.
| Laptop (ENERGY STAR test) | Short idle | On 1,000 Wh at that rate |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air 13-inch (M5) | 3.5–3.7 W | 9.8 days |
| Median of 1,157 notebooks | 4.9 W | 7.2 days |
| Dell XPS 13 (9350) | 5.2 W | 6.8 days |
| Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 | 6.2 W | 5.7 days |
| MacBook Pro 16-inch (M5 Max) | 7.4 W | 4.8 days |
Our query of ENERGY STAR’s certified-computers data (version 9.0), October 2026; runtimes use 85%, as if on AC. Idle is the floor. Video calls, compiling, gaming or a bright screen take much more, which is why we plan on 50 W for a laptop in use.
Making the battery go further
- Check the cable as well as the port. USB-IF says 100 W charging relies on USB-C cables rated at 5 A, and its 2021 update set separate cable requirements for 240 W.
- Turn the station’s AC outlets off when nothing needs them. The inverter uses power just by being on.
- Lower the screen brightness and close what you aren’t using; the gap between idle and busy is several times the idle figure.
- Add your router and phones in the runtime calculator to see a full work-from-home day.
